The evolution of a resume was first chronologically authored by Todd Lempicke in a "History of the Resume"
The technique by which a resume is crafted has drastically changed over the hundreds of years. The first official resume was drafted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1482. Initially, the main purpose of a resume was to serve as a letter of introduction. Today, it is a vital part of the whole recruitment process.
Let us now look into how resumes have evolved in the past hundreds of years.
THE FIRST RESUMES:
The first official resume, as mentioned earlier, was written by the famous Leonardo da Vinci. In the 1500s, resumes were used by travelling lords. They carried hand-written letters of introduction which they circulated amongst acquaintances. This caused the popularization of resumes. During this time, resumes were used in a very informal manner.
RESUMES IN THE 1900s:
In the early 1900s, resumes were mere formalities. They were mostly written on scraps of paper. By the 1940s, resumes became the ‘Facebook profiles’ of the period. They started to include weight, age, height, marital status, and religion. Resumes started to be an expected document in the recruitment process by 1950. With the passage of another decade, resumes started including outside interests like sports, club affiliations etc.
THE DIGITAL AGE:
Resumes gained a more important as well as professional significance by the 1970s. Around 1985 online background checking began. By the end of the 1980s, fax machines had entered the market. During this age, most resumes started taking the digital form. Hardly anyone stuck to the age old hand written resumes.
THE ERA OF THE INTERNET:
The internet and world wide web went public in 1994. Moster.com went live sometime that very year. By 1995, people started sending their resumes via emails. LinkedIn was launched in 2003. The whole resume formulation underwent a change around this time. Interactive resumes marked the beginning of optimal resumes during this period.
MULTIMEDIA AND VIDEO RESUMES:
The trend of sending video resumes picked up around 2006. More and more high school students began sending mp4 resumes to colleges for application purposes. Video resumes hit YouTube in 2007.
The recruitment process is incomplete without a resume. Almost every employer googles their employee before making a job offer. Social media has significantly entered the recruitment process too. Having a professionally made resume is an absolute requirement because even minute errors can cause major setbacks.
Today, resumes contain social media links. They are now more concise but with more visuals and multimedia. Digital CVs and visual/infographic resumes are trending. Landing a job in today’s market can be made easier if one has a proper and impressive resume to create his/her first impression.
Over a 100 million resumes will be sent out this year itself. The evolution of resumes has been tremendous. What started out as a casual custom is now a necessity. Today, the more interesting and easily comprehensible one’s resume is, the higher is their chance of successfully bagging a job
